In spite of dan Despite

Setelah in spite of dan despite kita menggunakan noun atau pronoun.

Perlu diingat bahwa gerund (bentuk -ing) adalah bentuk noun dari sebuah kata kerja (verb). Jadi pada kalimat terakhir di atas despite juga diikuti oleh noun.

Yang membedakan antara in spite of dan despite hanya “of”. Despite tidak menggunakan of. Kalimat berikut salah:

Setelah although kita menggunakan sebuah subjek dan sebuah kata kerja (verb).

In spite of dan despite boleh digunakan bersama dengan sebuah subjek dan sebuah kata kerja jika kita menyertakan frase “the fact that“.

• Despite the fact that she studied very hard, she didn’t manage to pass the exam.

Even though

Even though sama struktur penggunaannya dengan although, hanya saja even though lebih kuat.

Seperti although, even though juga diikuti dengan sebuah subjek dan sebuah kata kerja (verba).
